Kenny
I went to Ballard 6yrs.  My first grade teacher was Ms. Jones, lost all my pictures in a fire. I too would love to see any if they exist.

Thanks for that photo of Ballard. I have never been able to remember much about being in the 1st grade at Ballard, but I've always had two vague memories. One is crying when my mother left me on the first day of school. The other is having to stand outside the classroom for being bad. I always had the impression that the classroom opened out onto a breezeway, because I can remember looking out across open space. Through the window in that picture I can see the breezeway, and I remember the moss covered trees. What a great thing to see.

Thanks for the memory,

I missed Ballard 4th grade.  My family was in Rome Ga. Iwent all the other years there.  Sure do miss those carefree days.

The photo was taken in the cafeteria and did open up to a hallway.  One of my earliest memories of Ballard is the first grade playground.  We used to get the merry-go-round going so fast that our legs would flap in the breeze and our bodies would be sticking straight out.  The monkey bars were also great.  Danny Halligan fell one day and knocked himself out and from then one we had to have a teacher watching over us at play period.  Debra Reick was my first crush and Betty Jo Wiggins was my second.  Do you remember that Mr. Rooks was the principal?  He always had gum in his mouth.

I'm sorry to say that I don't remember anything about that playground. It's strange because in later years recess was my favorite subject. I must have been traumatized that year. My only other memory from Ballard is that on my birthday I refused to get off the bus at school. I think an older boy was threatening me and I was afraid of him. My sister told me that if I didn't get off I wouldn't get to have my party that afternoon after school. I still refused and rode the bus all the way to Glynn Academy with her. Then she had to call my mother to come get me. I don't remember anything after that.

I hope you and others from Ballard can recall some other early events that might jog my memory. Where did you live? I lived out near plant McMannis on Cedar St. Gary Tillman lived close to me and we were friends. I remember there was a turkey farm close to us.

Other than the playground, there’s nothing really remarkable to remember about Ballard (again, except for Mr. Rooks the incessant gum chewer).  There were two playgrounds.  One is the one I mentioned and it was on the front side of the school.  I think only 1st and 2nd graders used it.  The other was behind the school and was pretty big.  The 3rd thru 6th graders had that one.  I remember we played dodge ball a lot and had some swings that you could really catch some air on.

I lived on the Old Jesup Hwy. on the other side of the Turkey Farm from where you were.  Brenda & Diane Hale lived just down the road from me.  We (in my family) used to take a fishing pole and bait it with a piece of bread, throw it over the fence and wait for the stupid turkeys to come over (we threw bread chunks at them to get several over at one time), then we just waited until one grabbed the breaded hook and, voila, turkey for dinner.  Turkey Fishing never really caught on with the rest of the nation though.  I never understood why.  A truly great sport indeed!

Let’s see if I’m remembering correctly. My brother was 4yrs older than me so when i was in the first he was in the 5th and I believe the 5th and 6th grades were in what was the original Ballard School. Hey Charlie what grade where you there in? I lived on Avalon not far from McManus. Kenny can you remember if i'm right about the old school building?

The only teachers I can remember having at Ballard were Mrs. Wells for  1st grade, Mrs. Boswell for 2nd, Mrs. Anderson for 3rd and Mrs. Bridges for ?   I think the most memorable thing about Ballard  (and that time in our life) was the Cuban crisis and all of the drills and instructions that we had to endure...climbing under our desks with our arms and hands over our heads crouching waiting for the teacher to say the drill was over.   I just remember worrying that any day we would be bussed off to some other part of the state for our "parents to find us" there!  Does anyone else remember that time in elementary school?!

I was at Ballard only for the 1st grade. We moved to Savannah for my 2nd grade year, then to St. Simons for 3rd-12th. I looked up Avalon on the map and you lived only about 2 blocks from me. My street (cedar) was one block north of Crispen; you were one block south. I think Gary Tillman lived somewhere in your area. There was a house on Crispen that had a pond in the front yard with a little bridge. I always thought that was so cool. Way out in the woods behind my house there was a huge pit with rain water in it. We used to play there all the time. I see on the satellite map that it is now a large pond.

There’s was “new” building?  Damn, you’ve really caused a brain hernia now.  I left there after fifth grade (Mrs. Beard) and for the life of me I cannot place an “old” nor “new” building.  Sorry.  I’m getting old, you see, and the memories pale.

6th grade Ballard School Picture.  I can't remember if I had Mrs. Bridges in the 6th grade or not, it may have been the 5th.  Anyway, here is a picture I have of the class.
